GIRARD-PERREGAUX – LAUREATO 42MM CERAMIC

BLACK IS BLACK!

The Laureato has undergone many transformations since it first launched. This year sees the Girard-Perregaux icon dressed in ultra-trendy black ceramic!

1975 marked the arrival of the Laureato range by Girard-Perregaux. What an entrance it made. The name of the new soon-to-be legendary watch is inspired by the Mike Nichols film The Graduate, released in 1967 and telling the love story of a young student and older woman. The feature film caused quite a scandal at the time. Luckily the watch collection managed to make a name for itself without sparking controversy and has stood the test of time in a variety of equally remarkable versions.

A few weeks away from the SIHH 2018, Girard-Perregaux has unveiled the latest Laureato in a material that’s been fashionable for years: black ceramic. The Laureato 42mm Ceramic simply oozes elegant design and sports chic. The only features that aren’t black are the white luminescent hands and markers. The timepiece houses a self-winding in-house GP01800-0025 calibre with a 4Hz frequency and 54-hour power reserve. The “Clous de Paris” embellished dial features the hours, minutes and seconds in the middle and the date at 3.

The Laureato 42mm Ceramic plays on its satin-finished and polished surfaces to create a seductive look and bring the watch to life in spite of its inky hue. The flexible and lightweight strap is a joy to wear and fits in perfectly with the black ceramic 42mm case. Girard-Perregaux has brought us a high precision watch with an attractive and contemporary design.

FRÉDÉRIQUE CONSTANT – SLIMLINE MOONPHASE MANUFACTURE

OVER THE MOON

Frédérique Constant has transformed its Slimline Moonphase. The model has a bigger personality now that the moon phase and date displays have been separated!

If you like the Manufacture Slimline Moonphase then you’re going to love the Slimline Moonphase Manufacture! Frédérique Constant hasn’t just swapped the words round and called it a new watch. On the first model, the moon phase and date were together in the same disc at 6 but both features have their own symmetrical displays on the new one. The Slimline collection may be all about classic chic but additional functions aren’t going to tarnish its watches’ smart personality. Despite its compact 38.8mm case, the layout of the dial couldn’t be more spacious and the time displays are in keeping with each other. The slim hour and minute hands and streamlined markers enhance the sense of flawless style.

The watch is fuelled by the self-winding FC-702 movement (42-hour power reserve). The calibre brings to life the actual position of the moon in real-time in a star-spangled display. The counter with Arabic numerals on the rim has a pointer to track the date. The crown controls all the functions on the watch.

There are different versions available to suit a range of tastes. One has a silver or black dial with a rose gold-plated case. The other pairs a silvery dial with a steel case. The Slimline Moonphase Manufacture comes with a black or brown alligator strap (subject to model) that only enhances the sense of classic chic.

So, on 11 November in Geneva, Louis Moinet will be giving bidders a chance to acquire a watch with an unusual personality, the Metropolis Only Watch. blancpain boutique new-york stars

Blancpain – Multi-starred chef Joël Robuchon at Blancpain New York Boutique opening

The watchmaking Maison celebrated the official opening of its New York boutique, located at 697 Fifth Avenue, together with internationally renowned chef and friend of the brand, Joël Robuchon. A look back at a pleasant encounter and a private visit conducted by Mr. Alain Delamuraz, Vice-President and Head of Marketing, Blancpain.

The longstanding friendship between the Manufacture Blancpain and the talented French chef was marked by a double celebration. As the watch brand was launching its brand-new New York boutique, the winner of 31 Michelin stars was simultaneously opening his “L’Atelier Joël Robuchon” restaurant in a nearby district, the latest addition to those already established in Europe, Asia and North America. He took the opportunity of these two perfectly synchronized births to join Blancpain for the opening of its new 375 sq.m (i.e. 4,036 sq.ft) sales area spread over two floors, featuring a freshly reinterpreted design.

A number of journalists and friends of the brand attending the occasion enjoyed a private tour providing an introduction to the premises and the Blancpain universe, conducted by Alain Delamuraz. This was followed by a friendly yet passionate dialogue between the latter and the great French chef, focusing on common core values such as the quest for quality and excellence, expertise, a deft touch and meticulous workmanship. A shared philosophy summed up by Alain Delamuraz: “Innovation is our tradition. Joël Robuchon is exactly the same, in that his techniques and creations are constantly evolving. This unremitting determination to call into question all that we do will thus enable us to progress and build the future.” In turn, the Michelin-starred chef confirmed that he shares the same vision when introduced to the watches from the Fifty Fathoms, Le Brassus and Villeret collections: “I had the opportunity of getting a closer look at the work of master-watchmakers during my visit to the Manufacture Blancpain. I saw the precision with which they work and the care they devote to their art and I understood the pride that we – chefs and watchmakers – take in producing our creations.

At the end of the visit, in a sudden burst of enthusiasm, Joël Robuchon seized the opportunity to carry off with the boutique’s wall clock. He proudly reinstalled his prize in his new establishment as a symbol of his “deep attachment to the Manufacture in the Vallée de Joux”, while emphasizing that “time is an essential ingredient in cooking”.

For more than 30 years, long before haute cuisine achieved its current popularity, the Maison Blancpain has enjoyed friendly ties with some of the greatest exponents of this art. Its relationship with Joël Robuchon, to cite the case in point, dates back to 1989 when he, Frédy Girardet and Paul Bocuse were nominated “Chefs of the Century” by the Gault&Millau guide, and the brand presented them each with a specially engraved watch to commemorate this distinction. Over the years, the Manufacture has unremittingly pursued and consolidated its commitment to the Art of Living with internationally renowned chefs.

ROLEX – COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA

RACING ELEGANCE

Three new models have joined the Cosmograph Daytona collection. What do they have in common? Precious metal cases, a Cerachrom bezel and new elastomer straps.

Created in 1963, the Daytona has never ceased to be a subject of watchmaking conversation ever since Paul Newman wore his own watch in the film Winning. This very watch has just made the news after it was sold at an exceptional auction in Geneva for the record-breaking sum of 17.8 million dollars. This year, Rolex is keeping the legend alive with three versions of the Cosmograph Daytona, with one in yellow gold, a second in rose gold and a third in Everose, a rose gold alloy created in the manufacture’s foundry. True to the spirit of the original model, these chronographs provide drivers with great tools. With a tachymeter incorporated in the black ceramic Cerachrom bezel, it is easy for champion drivers to measure their average speed up to 400km/h (or miles per hour, depending on their unit preference). On the dial, we find the counters in tri-compax position to measure shorter time periods in 1/8th of a second.

These Cosmograph Daytona watches are worn with a new Oysterflex strap, adding to their sports style. The straps combine the robustness of a steel strap with the flexibility and aesthetics of their elastomere counterpart. Like all Rolex watches, the three Daytonas have a double certification, from the COSC as chronometers, and from Rolex as “superlative chronographs”.

PIAGET – ALTIPLANO POCKET WATCH

FROM POCKET TO DESK

To celebrate 60 years of its extra-thin watch, Piaget unveils an original interpretation in the form of an elegant pocket watch combined with a desk stand.

Piaget is celebrating 60 years of its iconic Altiplano. To mark the occasion, at the beginning of the year, the company produced a range of magnificent, coloured versions of its extra-thin watch. Like the climax of a firework display, the highpoint of this range is the Altiplano 60th Anniversary Pocket Watch! It is a very uncluttered design, and has all the striking aspects needed to attract collectors and modern-day dandies. Set on an elegant blue, calfskin string with a pin buckle, this limited series of 26 pieces appears in an imposing 50mm-diameter white gold case. The intense blue of its sunray dial contrasts with the slim hands and the white gold markers typical of the collection. In the centre, a discreet blue cross is reminiscent of the historic models of the 1950s.

piaget altiplano pocket watch 60th anniversary table clock

This timepiece is powered by an ultra-thin, self-winding movement. The 1200P does not exceed 2.35mm in thickness, and offers a power reserve of 44 hours for the watch. Its outstanding finish, Côtes de Genève, “perlé” bridges and plates and angled bridges, can be seen through the sapphire caseback.

This piece can be protected with a leather pouch, but there is no incentive to leave it inside! Indeed, Piaget has had the good idea of creating a sublime blue straw marquetry desk stand. Using this craftsman-made product to hold the Altiplano 60th Anniversary Pocket Watch in its allotted place, its owner can enjoy this really exceptional watch at any time.

ULYSSE NARDIN – MARINE CHRONOMETER ANNUAL CALENDAR MONACO

Chronometer for the sea!

The new anniversary marine chronometer by Ulysee Nardin sets sail in the wake of the watches that made the brand’s name.

The Swiss manufacture Ulysse Nardin is not only known for its high-precision timepieces, based on remarkable technical innovations, but also for being deeply anchored in the sea world, since it was founded in 1846. To fittingly celebrate nine years of a partnership with the Monaco Yacht Show, the world’s biggest yacht exhibition that brings together yacht builders and fans, Ulysse Nardin has unveiled the Marine Chronometer Annual Calendar Monaco. This timepiece unashamedly hoists the sails in the tradition of the marine chronometers that have made the name of the Le Locle-based brand.

ulysse nardin marine chrono annual calendar monaco closeup

The DNA of the Marine Chronometer Annual Calendar Monaco contains all its seafaring roots. The white lacquered dial with its blue Roman numeral indices evokes the Monaco Yacht Show, a homage repeated in the inscription “Monaco 2017” on the dial, as well as the dates of the event (27, 28, 29 and 30) and the month of September, shown in blue, instead of black, on the date disc. The calibre UN-113 is at work inside the watch, with a spiral movement and a silicon escapement, entirely made at Ulysse Nardin, in the Le Locle workshop. It can be used to set the time and the calendar both forward and back.

Equipped with a 43mm stainless steel case, the Marine Chronometer Annual Calendar Monaco features a fluted bevel and a rubberised screw-down crown. As a result, it is at ease in deep underwater descents down to 100 metres. Ulysse Nardin has produced a remarkable annual calendar, together with a power reserve of 60 hours. Easy to use and with an undeniable aesthetic appeal, this timepiece is the exploit of the watchmaker Ludwig Oechslin, who has made simplicity his philosophy of life.
