Among its new watches launched during the SIHH, the Geneva-based brand brought out a new model with a smoky blue dial and equipped with an in-house automatic calibre certified by the COSC: the Baumatic.

Baume & Mercier is the epitome of watchmaking skill at affordable prices. The watches made by the Geneva-based firm are indeed inexpensive, but never compromise on design, quality or (most of all!) the mechanism. After launching its in-house calibre in 2018, Baume & Mercier is back this year, taking things further with a new version of the Baumatic (BM 13-1975A), an automatic movement that is certified as a chronometer by the COSC, the official Swiss institute that carries out tests for reliability and accuracy. Along with the immaculate calibre, the new watch, simple known as the Clifton Baumatic COSC, displays all the main time information on a wonderful blue dial.

baume et mercier classima un violon sur le sable 2017 closup et caseback

In tribute to the 30th “Un violon sur le sable” festival, Baume & Mercier has unveiled a limited edition whose dial comes to life with the curves of a string instrument.

The annual “Un violon sur le sable” symphony music festival has been held on Plage de la Grande Conche de Royan beach in the Charente-Maritime, South West France, in late July since 1987. The event lasts a good week and attracts around 50,000 people every night whether they love classical music or just want to see what’s happening. As night falls they come to listen to soloists accompanied by an orchestra of 80 musicians on the fine sand beach stretching 2600m by the Atlantic. Baume & Mercier has sponsored the festival for the last 7 years in a row and has brought out a piece especially designed for the 30th event of its kind: Classima “Un violon sur le sable”.

The new watch (330 available) is the third one to have festival ties as Baume & Mercier brought out the first in 2012 for the 25th anniversary of “Un violon sur le sable” and the second in 2014 for the young talent contest. 2017’s Classima “Un violon sur le sable” has a polished steel 40mm case surrounded by a slim bezel. The back is covered in a spruce disc, a type of wood popular in instrument making, bearing the festival logo and the 30th anniversary slogan. The metal case houses a quartz movement that brings to life the hours and minutes (in the centre) and the date (at 3).

The dial is adorned by a silhouette of a violin whose sound boards feature two Roman numerals (12 and 6). Two slim silver leaf-shape hands in the centre track the hours and minutes.

The fruit of a partnership between the watchmaker and the racing car team, the dial on this new watch features the colours of a legendary sports car, the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupé.

The design is without doubt the strong point of Baume & Mercier, who have been working on a new timepiece in collaboration with its partner, the Carroll Shelby company, for the past two years. After the Capeland Shelby® Cobra 1963 model, released in 2016 for the SIHH, it’s now the turn of the Clifton collection to welcome the fruit of a partnership between the watchmaker and the motor-racing stable: the Clifton Club Shelby® Cobra CSX2299 chronograph.

This limited edition of 196 pieces revives the aesthetic features of the legendary Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupé, 1st place in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1964 in the GT category, and 4th place in the overall race. What strikes you, first of all, is the dual-coloured dial of the Clifton Club Shelby® Cobra CSX2299, inspired by the “Viking Blue“ paintwork on the racing car, and decorated with two white stripes. Here, blue covers the right-hand side of the watch, while the left-hand side has a white gloss. In the centre, two white dauphine-style rhodium watch hands, coated with Super-LumiNova® blue emission, display the hours and minutes, together with a second counter at 9 o’clock and an open date display at 4.30. As for the chronograph function with a flyback movement, the seconds are shown in the centre with a red second hand featuring the Cobra logo, while the minutes are displayed in a counter with a red hand (at 3 o’clock).

The various displays are powered by a self-winding mechanism, the La Joux-Perret 8147-2 calibre. This is housed in a titanium and steel case with a diameter of 44mm.

The crescent moon crowns the case and dial of this newly-released, poetically-feminine Baume & Mercier-imagined timepiece

A dreamscape, inviting us to subtly escape, a blue-tinted glow, enshrouding us, carrying us away to a fantasy world, a crescent moon, enticing us to lie back, like Pierrot… Just a glimpse of the emotional sensations inspired by Promesse Moon Phase, Baume & Mercier’s delightful end-of-year centrepiece, exclusively created for ladies. No doubt about it, 2017 will be pure poetry!

baume et mercier promesse closeup

Promesse Moon Phase nestling in a 34 mm-diameter, 50-metre water-resistant steel case, is complemented by a glossy blue alligator strap. Two peripheral curved-shaped grooves set with fifteen diamonds each, totalling 0.38 carats, form precious interludes along the bezel. These twinkling gems embrace an ethereal blue-lacquered dial that perceptibly deepens from centre to flange, a centrepiece similar to the style obtained using the Sfumato technique. Just like the celestial vault that adds the magic sparkle to its stars at night, the hour chapter features four indexes adorned with brilliant-cut diamonds (0.02 carats) and six silvered pearls. Two small Dauphine hands, set at the heart of the dial, display the hours and minutes.

At the centre of this Baume & Mercier-imagined celestial sphere, at exactly 12 o’clock, a sleekly-bevelled aperture recreates the silhouette of a crescent moon and centre stages four moon phases on a black backdrop interspersed with twinkling stars.

These dome-sapphire protected displays are powered by a Ronda 708 quartz movement.

The Geneva-based, soft-priced, luxury brand is absolutely clear about its intentions for 2017: to spark our desire for travel

Boasting the design codes of a 1950-crafted timepiece that is currently kept in the Baume & Mercier Museum, Clifton is a collection of classical-styled watches which, over the years, have integrated an increasing number of “useful” complications. A myriad of features have been added to the rather “simple”, historic 2013 Clifton, including a chronograph, GMT, day/date, moon phase and power reserve indicator, among others. For 2017, Baume & Mercier present us with a timepiece that incorporates two of the aforementioned complications: Clifton GMT Power Reserve.

baume et mercier clifton closeup

This latest-released Clifton GMT Power Reserve sports a royal blue dial with a sun-brushed finish enhanced with beams radiating out from the centre of the disc to the rim which embraces a fine white minute tracker. The hour chapter is adorned with rhodium-plated graphical teardrop indexes and exquisitely-rounded Arabic numerals. Two tapered silvered hands and a silvered direct-drive, poised at the heart of the blue dial, indicate the hours, minutes and seconds. The black-figured, white-backdrop date is displayed in a silver-white-framed aperture at 3 o’clock. An arc-shaped counter at 12 o’clock, completed by a tiny double-edged, two-tone hand, features the second time zone. The 0 to 40-graduated power reserve indicator is set in the lower half of the dial at 6 o’clock (although the timepiece actually has 42 hours autonomy).

The Clifton GMT Power Reserve nestling in a 43 mm-diameter steel case is water-resistant to 50 metres. The four-point screwed caseback with sapphire porthole unveils a self-winding Soprod 9035 calibre that drives the functions and complications featured in this newly-released Baume & Mercier timepiece.

Baume Mercier – Clifton Perpetual Calendar

Every year Baume & Mercier brings out an exclusive piece from its famous Clifton Collection. The new Clifton Perpetual Calendar is the latest in the range that has sealed the brand’s success.

The Baume brothers were fuelled by the drive to make top quality watches when they built the foundations of Baume & Mercier in 1830. Mission accomplished: the brand is renowned for its precision, reliability and expertise all soaked in its signature classic style. The Clifton collection prides itself on its vintage design influenced by 1950s watches.

In tribute to star gazing and celestial mechanics, the new Clifton Perpetual Calendar houses one of the most impressive complications in fine watchmaking. The movement in the red gold case is true to the unique features of the Gregorian calendar. By automatically taking into account variable months and leap years, this Clifton Perpetual Calendar is among the most complex as the date display doesn’t need to be corrected before March 1st 2100, a non-leap year which comes three out of four centuries. So you have time!

The calibre’s cool details include Côtes de Genève on the bridges and “perlage” on the plate with blue steel screws. The display on the new Clifton Perpetual Calendar has a captivating classic look. The shimmering silver domed dial oozes the Swiss brand’s signature sophistication with a sapphire crystal to make it easier to tell the time. The Clifton Perpetual Calendar’s timeless style runs into the black alligator strap with a red gold deployment clasp. In keeping with the Baume & Mercier philosophy of affordable watches even in the world of grandes complications, this model has been painstakingly made and is worthy of fine watchmaking.

Introducing the Baume & Mercier Petite Promesse

A promise is a commitment to give something to someone, to form a bond. It’s also the name of a ladies’ watch collection launched by Baume & Mercier in 2015 which is now expanding to include a miniature model: Petite Promesse. Small but perfectly formed!

Its white mother-of-pearl dial is sparkles with two diamond markers at 6 and 12 o’clock. A quartz movement brings to life a pair of silver dauphine-shape hands to track the hours and minutes in the centre.

The 22mm steel oval case glitters with two rows of 22 diamonds in a symmetrical crescent moon on the bezel or 44 diamonds on the crown, all brilliant-cut. Stripped of a crown to keep its design clean, Petite Promesse conceals a corrector on its case back. A twin calfskin strap wraps it around the wrist and glows bright orange, sky blue or “quilted” steel.
